September 12, 2025 – Prime Minister Mark Carney has unveiled the first five major projects to be expedited under the government’s new Major Projects Office. These projects include:
- Phase II of LNG Canada in Kitimat, BC
- Red Chris Mine expansion in northwest BC
- McIlvenna Bay copper mine in central Saskatchewan
- Darlington New Nuclear project in Clarington, ON
- Contrecœur Terminal container project in Contrecœur, QC
The Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada (MCAC) has expressed support for these initiatives but highlighted the need for a skilled workforce to meet the demands. The projects are expected to require at least 24,500 construction workers and an additional 6,000 for ongoing operations. MCAC emphasizes the importance of scaling up the “growth-critical” skilled trades workforce to ensure timely project delivery.
